Love is the Most Important Thing in the World, but Baseball is Pretty Good, Too (Yogi Berra)

Yogi Berra died today. He was 90 years old. He played almost his entire 19-year baseball career for the New York Yankees and is regarded as one of the best catchers of all time. He was an All-Star for 15 seasons, one of only four players to be named the MVP of the American League 3 times, and one of seven managers to lead both American and National League teams to the World Series. As a player, coach, or manager, he appeared in 21 World Series and celebrated 13 World Series championships. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1972 and named to MBL's All-Century Team in 1999.

Many of us who came of age after Berra's playing career was over remember him more for his witticisms (known as Yogi-isms) than his prowess on the ball field. So in memory of Yogi, here are a few:
  • Love is the most important thing in the world, but baseball is pretty good, too.
  • It's deja vu all over again.
  • It ain't over 'til it's over
  • Even Napoleon had his Watergate.
  • You better cut the pizza in four pieces because I'm not hungry enough to eat six.
  • In theory there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice there is.
  • If you don't know where you are going, you might wind up someplace else.
  • Ninety percent of this game is half mental.
  • The other teams could make trouble for us if they win.
  • You wouldn't have won if we'd beaten you.Think! How the hell are you gonna think and hit at the same time?
  • When you come to a fork in the road, take it.
  • Congratulations. I knew the record would stand until it was broken.
  • I wish I had an answer to that because I'm tired of answering that question.
  • Nobody goes there anymore. It's too crowded.
  • You can observe a lot by just watching.
  • A nickel ain't worth a dime anymore.
  • We made too many wrong mistakes.
  • So I'm ugly. So what? I never saw anyone hit with his face.
  • Baseball is 90 percent mental. The other half is physical
  • It was impossible to get a conversation going, everybody was talking too much.
  • I can see how he (Sandy Koufax) won 25 games. What I don’t understand is how he lost five.
  • You should always go to other people’s funerals, otherwise, they won’t come to yours.
  • The future ain't what it used to be.
And
  • I really didn't say everything I said.

Yogi, you were pretty good too...
